Reflections

Three and one-half years ago, I decided to embark on a journey to begin a new career and obtain a second Masters degree, this time in library science.  My motivation for doing so was a strong desire to continue to grow professionally and personally, particularly in the area of computer technology and information literacy. Perhaps, it was an incredible fear that by not doing so, I would become a dinosaur in the twenty-first century, unable to apply the vast array of new computer technologies, nor comprehend the value that they could impart on my life.  And so, I entered my first course in Southern Connecticut's Masters of Library Science program of study, Foundations of Librarianship, and began a journey of discovery and self-fulfillment.  This path has exceeded my expectations of learning new skills and understanding and applying new technologies.  I have become passionate about making this opportunity available to everyone;  first, through my service in a public library and secondarily, as a school media specialist. I feel that this desire for knowledge and wish to share and protect this quest for others is the passion that I have developed through my program of study.  Repeatedly along the journey, the principles of fairness, ethics and service were reinforced in all aspects of librarianship.  I carry these principles into my current profession and promote open access to information and self-enrichment through discovery.

One of the greatest rewards in my studies has been the individuals with whom I have shared the journey.  My advisors, teachers and classmates have impressed me with their passion for learning, staunch work ethic and selfless service in sharing their acquired knowledge.  It is no coincidence that these very traits, which I now equate to those wonderful providers of library services, reflect the very same principles that were first heard in Foundations of Librarianship.  It is with pride that I have entered the company of these incredible individuals.
